Clever Decorating Ideas For Thanksgiving Table

Are you hosting Thanksgiving this year and looking for table top ideas?  Here are my 'easy as apple pie' decorating tips that will bring color, shine and best of all, not cost a turkey to implement (ha ha!)......

This table top decor is crafted of natural materials, has a little shimmer,
and leaves enough room for all the food!!

Thanksgiving is the one holiday we dress up for food so lets give our table a look that is  glam 'home made' style.  Glam 'home made' style' means  keeping things easy looking but put together well.  Save the bling for the winter holidays, and instead, bring in more natural materials.

Put Your Money Into The Following:

1. Fabric tablecloth.  You can wash it at the end of the day and use it each year.  Consider your color scheme.  Choose a color that you will be able to work with each year.  Brown is a good neutral if you are unsure.  I have a golden tan that has a bit of sparkle on my table.

2. Charger Plates.  These are not expensive and can make a huge difference on your table.  It can turn even a plastic plate into something special! And like the tablecloth, you can use them over and over again!  I like the choices that overstock.com has.

3. Cloth Napkins.  This is the last of the three investment worthy pieces for your table.  Real fabric napkins placed at each guest's setting gives a chic finishing touch.  It is the old fashioned factor that has been used at eating gathering for hundreds of years in the most high end establishments.

2013 Inspired By Natural Materials

-Jute Twine Is Your Best Friend!  As you can see from the DIY projects below I have been having a love affair with twine.  Pick it up at craft stores or hardware stores and have it on hand.
-Go for color that you have not used before (I have done reds, oranges, greens, but not blue so I used it this year on my table)
-Paper is a reusable, recyclable material so use it!  I love these paper lanterns DIY projects!

DIY PROJECTS

Burlap Ribbon Table Runner

This table runner is as simple as it gets!  All you need is burlap ribbon!  You can pick this up at any craft store.  I found a 6" wide blue ribbon and a 12" wide tan color at Hobby Lobby for my table.

STEP ONE - After your table cloth is on, roll the wider burlap runner out like this photo below and using a pair of scissors, cut it to the size of table cloth length.

STEP TWO - roll the smaller runner out like photo below and cut to same length as the wider one.

 Add your plate chargers.

And build the rest from there...like this.

Paper Bag Candle Lantern

I love this DIY project because you may not even need to leave the house to make it!  They are unexpected! Watch your guests stare at them while eating.

For this project you will need a paper bag (get wild and try one with a bold color or funky pattern!), a battery operated candle, and a razor blade.

*this is not a project to do with a child

Lay your bag down flat and using a pencil, create stars in any pattern you choose like above.

Carefully use the blade over your pencil marks.  Be mindful not to run the blade through both sides of the bag.

Add the battery candle.

Check out how beautiful I look when the lights are low!!
*Remember not to use real candles with this paper lantern!

TIP: You can cut off the handles and add ribbon with a hot glue gun like I did above!

Construction Paper Lantern
This is a fun project to do with the kids!  And you might already have all the ingredients needed to whip up some fun lighting for your thanksgiving day table!

For this project you will need construction paper, scissors, a hole puncher, double sided tape and a battery operated candle.

You can pick up the candle at the Dollar Store or any craft store.

STEP ONE- Fold your paper in half the long way and cut along the folded line so you will end  up with two equal pieces (you can make two candle holders!).

TIP: You can use fun craft scissors along the edge to create a unique upper edge.

STEP TWO- punch holes all over the paper like above.

STEP THREE- place double sided tape along one of the short edges, fold that side into a cylinder and press the tape into place like above.  Now you have a beautiful round paper lantern (or 2 if you used the other half of the construction paper!)

TIP: You can add ribbon around it and keep it in place with hot glue.

STEP FOUR- Add a battery operated candle and enjoy!

Napkin Rings & Place Cards

Create place cards that are so adorable!!

FIRST make the napkin holder:

Napkin Ring

For this project you will need a scissor, a fabric napkin, a  burlap ribbon (mine has satin on the edges), and a hot glue gun.

STEP ONE - roll your napkin up like above photo (don't roll too tight) and cut a piece of ribbon that is an inch longer than the rolled up width.

STEP TWO - hot glue the ribbon around the napkin (don't get hot glue on the napkin)

DONE!! (your guests will be able to roll the ring right off the napkin)

ADD Place Cards.....

Tag Place Cards

So simple!  You will need:
twine and a pair of acorn (can use faux acorns or any other creative natural elements like a pine comb!)

STEP ONE- cut eight inches of twine and knot it at the center.

STEP TWO - Attach a gift tag to it by knotting it to the !
*You can use ready made gift tags or make your own!

Write a guest's name on each tag and place at the table place setting you choose on top of the napkin ring you just made!

PLANT CENTERPIECE

Peacock feathers are a consistent trend.  Maybe its the exotic shapes or the bold colors; whatever the reason, I chose to incorporate it into my Thanksgiving table design this year.  I used faux peacock feathers for my centerpiece.

For my table centerpieces I purchased two mason jars at the Dollar Store, and some faux plants and several glittery faux peacock feathers from a craft store.  I also bought some pine combs and acorn nuts (you can find them in your local natural outdoor surroundings as well).

Simply unscrew the tops of the jars, fill them with the pine and nuts, and place the faux plants in them.

When finished, take some twine and wrap it around the mason jar.  That's it!

Fun Fall DIY Dream Tree For Thankgiving

In 2011 I made my first Dream Tree.  My daughter and I walked around our local park and collected a few pretty branches.  We arranged them in a vase, and began adding our dreams to it!

West Elm would probably sell something like this for way too much.....but you can create it yourself!

GET DETAILS HERE!

This project was so easy and uplifting that I shared it on my  blog, then Houzz asked to share it on their website SEE IT HERE.  It has been linked to other DIY sites who have come up with their own Tree, and although there are a million and one ways to make a Dream Tree, each one is a beautiful inspirational addition to any space.

Here's the tree I did this year!

There are so many ways to use the Dream Tree:
-A teacher told me she uses it as a tool to get her students to read more (A Reading Tree)
-A staff member at a long stay home uses it with her patients
-A host of Thanksgiving has her guests write on each leaf what they are thankful for and then uses the Dream Tree as the table centerpiece.

Turn it into a Winter 'Wish Ya' Tree

Once winter hits turn your Dream Tree into a Winter 'Wish Ya' tree!  Its so easy, and can be a great meaningful piece of holiday decor any where!

Here's how to create it:

You will need:
1. Wrapping paper
2. Branches (re use the Dream Tree branches)
3. Outdoor spray paint in silver
4. An empty box

This is super simple to make!

Wrap the outside of the box leaving the top open to place the branches in.  I added a bow.

Add rocks to the inside of the box to weigh it down so it does not fall over; and the rocks will also hold the branches in.

Write your 'wish ya' message on paper and tape them to ornaments.  Hang the ornaments from the branches using ornament hooks.

If you want to get a bit more creative, add ribbon to the ornaments and snow flakes out of paper (simply fold up 3"x3" square paper into a triangle, then fold it again into a smaller triangle, and using a scissor, cut tiny triangles out of it in different places)

Ways you can use a 'Wish Ya' Tree:
-Create ornament messages that are reminders that 'wish ya' and yours well (like kindness, patience, health, happiness,..)

-Have your kids write messages of what they 'wish ya' for this season.  This is a good learning lesson to instill each year before getting all those presents!

-Use in an office space and have each employee add a 'wish ya' message for their fellow associates.

Nostalgic Birthday Jell-O Shots Anyone? Its Easy!

Last week I told you on facebook (Love Your Room) that as soon as I finished my live TV segment on 69 News at Sunrise I was running home to tackle making ninety jell-o shots for a friends birthday.

It was a nostalgic treat for my pal Marc whose party was a Rutgers Tailgating blow out.  I have not made jell-o shots in more years than I care to recall so I had to surf the web for instructions.

It was super easy and was a big hit!

To Make 90 Jell-o Shots

Ingredients:
I bought 4 boxes of 12 oz. packaged jell-o (2 boxes in blueberry and 2 boxes in fruit punch flavored) and a bottle of vodka.  Also 3 oz. plastic cups and 3 bags of swedish fish candy.

Steps:
1. I chilled a bottle of vodka and 4 cups of water.
2. Next I mixed the jell-o boxes with 4 cups of boiling water, stirring for 2 minutes.
3. Then, I added the 4 cups of chilled water and 4 cups vodka, and mixed again.
4. Finally I added the mix to each cup and placed in the frig.
*Tip - spray the inside of the cups with baking or cooking spray to keep the jell-o from sticking in the cup before adding the mix.

I can't believe it works so easily!!

Before serving: Add a swedish fish to each cup for added cuteness!  To do this, make an incision with a knife into the cup and place the fish partly in.  The firm jell-o should hold it.

As for the lovely man taped to each of the jell-o shots, this is my friend Marc, and I taped his face to each and every cup.

Tailgating was a blast.  The best part of the day was when Rutgers came back for a win in the third quarter!  Also the bonus event occurred during the game when a fight 'almost' broke out a few seats down from me.  It was over a poorly thrown piece of pretzel!  Men and their food!!  How would you react if you were hit in the back of the head with a pretzel and then told 'I meant to hit my buddy but hitting you was a bonus!'

So happy birthday Ruby! We love ya!!

Cute Animal Themed Kid Birthday

When my kid handed me a piece of paper with her 'vision' for a cake that included Littlest Pet Shop (see below), she knew that her smiling blue eyes would make it impossible for me to refuse to make it.

We baked 2 cake sheets, frosted one with green dyed frosting, and cut up the other one to create the house.  We had a fun time doing most of it.....had to get a bit creative with the house, placing equally square cake pieces on top of each other with frosting sandwiched between them; then inserting two straws through them to brace them in place.

We decorated the cake with candy and green sprinkles (eating all but one blueberry jelly bean along the way), then added all the toys.

QUICK DECOR

For decor we bought cute little buckets and star balloons from the Dollar Store, then using our construction paper, scissors and glue, we made a bunny, kitty cat, and bear faces, then simply taped the pieces to the balloons.  We filled each bucket with animal crackers.

ANIMAL GAME

We did not do a big bash to celebrate but still made it fun by creating a scavenger hunt for Littlest Pet Shop toy kangaroos.  After declaring that 'Our kangaroos are on the loose from our zoo and we need to find them!', I gave clues that led to other clues around the house.  One clue said 'your 'roo is eating leftover pasta', then after finding that next clue in the frig, it read 'What a naughty 'roo, she's drinking from the toilet!', and so on.

She laughed so much running around the house!

ANIMAL FOOD

We also made gross but fun animal food!
Cat Litter - crushed graham crackers with oval chocolates.
Doggy Food - crushed mint chocolate cookies
Fishing Worms - gummy worms

And we ate from doggy dishes with our names on each bowl.

It was a delicious and silly day!
